"THE FIRST RIGHT IS LIFE": CONGRESSMAN BACHUS FLOOR REMARKS ON HEALTH CARE BILL VOTE

WASHINGTON (March 21) – The following are the floor remarks of Congressman Spencer Bachus (AL-6) on today’s health care vote, as prepared for delivery.  Bachus voted against a government takeover of health care.

“In our Declaration of Independence, our Forefathers declared that we are endowed by the Creator with certain inalienable rights.  The first is life.  Yet the bill that we are voting on today would permit the public funding of abortion in any number of programs to take an innocent life formed by our Creator within a matter of months, weeks, or even days.

The very first act by our government on this innocent and defenseless life would be to end it.

Our forefathers could not comprehend such an outrageous act.  On this very day – March 21 – exactly 63 years ago, Chaplain Peter Marshall prayed on the floor of the Senate, ‘Save us from accepting a little of what we know to be wrong to get a little of what we imagine to be right.’

This is accepting a lot of what is wrong to accept some things that we imagine might be right.  Let me close by again quoting a portion of the prayer Chaplain Marshall addressed to the Lord, our God: ‘Help us to stand up for the inalienable rights of mankind…knowing that Thy Power and Thy Blessing will be upon us only when we are in the right.

May we so speak, and vote, and live, as to merit Thy Blessing.’”

Bachus cast the following votes on three key pieces of legislation passed by the Democrat majority in the House.

NO on the Rule to consider H.R. 3590 (Senate Health Care Bill) and H.R. 4872 (Reconciliation Bill)

NO on the Motion to Concur on Senate Amendments to H.R. 3590 sponsored by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Senate Health Care Bill)

NO on H.R. 4872, Reconciliation Act of 2010 (Reconciliation Bill)
Bachus voted in favor of a procedural motion that would have banned public funding of abortion in the health care legislation.  The measure was defeated when the overwhelming majority of the Democrat caucus voted against it.
